With Australia one of the few western countries to have technically avoided going into recession, there's more of an upbeat mood at the major container ports and little sign of a slowdown in their expansion plans.rnSydney, the first of the five main ports to report its fiscal 2008/09 figures, even managed to record its eighth consecutive year of growth in container volumes - albeit an extremely modest 0.3% increase to 1.784 million TEU.rnThe rise was heavily front-end loaded, with the first half of the financial year providing the healthiest figures. This included a record achievement in November 2008 of 168,000TEU.
