ICS appeals for environmental measures

The International Chamber of Shipping (ISC) has renewed its appeal for all governments to allow future environmental legislation on ships to be co-ordinated through the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).rnIt fears that less effective measures could be agreed at the UN's Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December. Shipping is still exempt from carbon trading, for example.rnDetails of the ISC's arguments can be obtained from www.marisec.org/CO~2, but in summary, it believes that alternative Kyoto-type restrictions on carbon emissions could be avoided by some shipowners through such measures as registering vessels in non-signatory countries.
