There has been much talk in the past and there continues to be much spoken about the potential of the Caribbean basin and Central America isthmus as a manufacturing and agricultural sourcing region for the US. While some activity does take place and various tax-friendly trading regimes are in place to facilitate this, business is relatively less significant today than it was 20 to 30 years ago. Indeed, low-cost and highly efficient producers based in the Far East, especially in China, has become dominant.
