The world containership fleet grew by 0.9% in June and exceeded 16 million TEU for the first time. Over 5,050 ships were classed as cellular ships in service, with this figure expected to rise to almost 5,500 units and more than 18.5 million TEU by end of 2013, depending on demolition activity (see table). On an annualised basis, slot capacity in service at the end of June 2012 was 1.15 million TEU higher than in the corresponding period of 2011, a jump of 7.7% and a slight acceleration on the 7.4% rise posted last month.
