Brazil has been something of a shining star in global economic terms in the past two years, with national GDP expanding by 5.7% last year and forecast to grow 7.5% in 2012. But huge regional variations prevail in the country with the under-developed north and north east areas posting growth rates in the 8%-12% range. With port cities, such as Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza and Manaus all hosting World Cup soccer matches in 2014, investment in better port and freight transport access systems is imperative.
