The tremendous build-up in container-handling capacity in the Middle East region appears to be justified as exports from the region are likely to remain brisk and firm oil and gas prices continue to drive private and public consumption levels thus driving imports. However, the situation is finely balanced and changes in the global market could swing the balance either way. In addition, competition between ports/terminals is intensifying with operators announcing new schemes and capacity enhancements in an effort to drive their advantage home.
