Indonesia's Tanjung Priok in northern Jakata managed a 9.8% rise in volumes to an estimated 6.2m teu - its theoretical capacity is 5m teu - and is on course for 7m teu in 2013. But with a congested terminal complex and a draught range limited to 4,500 teu vessels, the Indonesian government is pushing ahead with a new container terminal complex at New Priok Port (also known as Kalibaru) adjacent to the existing facility in north Jakata. Japan's Mitsui & Co Ltd is the preferred bidder to operate Kalibaru's first container terminal, with a 16 m draught and 850 m of quay length. It will have 1.5m teu of annual capacity and a scheduled opening date of 2014. Mitsui appears to have outbid both APM Terminals and ICTSI. State-owned port company Pelindo II, also known as the Indonesian Port Corp, has already launched the tender process for terminals two and three, with an estimated 18 foreign operators bidding for the concessions. When complete by around 2017, the new terminal first phase cluster - all at 16 m depth - will add a much needed 4.5m teu of annual capacity at the Indonesian hub.
