NEW NORMAL FOR GLOBAL BOX PORTS

Global container volumes are expected to grow by 6.1% in 2014 to hit 170m teu, as the world's economies adjust to a "new normal". Although this would be well down on the spectacular double digit container volume growth before the 2008 global economic crash, the additional boxes still present a range of challenges to the box port sector. In 2012, the world's top 100 container ports handled 494m teu. In 2013 this is expected to reach 516m teu, and then 547m teu in 2014 - an average jump of 25m teu per year, or the equivalent of a Hong Kong terminal complex. Such is the scale of container growth in a "depressed market".
