When Delft University published a little red book in 1999 on the ultimate container carrier, many regarded the conclusions as little more than academic theory, far removed from commercial reality. The three authors - Niko Wijnolst, Marco Scholtens and Frans Waals - set out the scenario for 18,000 teu ships, with detailed technical analysis to back up their case, dubbing a vessel of that size a malacca-max, because of the draught constraints of the Malacca Strait.
