The world cellular fleet stood at 5,042 vessels comprising just under 17m teu at the end of November, remaining largely static on the previous month. Eight vessels with combined capacity of 51,723 teu joined the fleet during the month, the largest of which was the 13,386 teu Cosco Netherlands delivered to Cosco Container Lines by Chinese shipyard Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering. Despite some glimmers of hope in the container sector as liftings increase, conditions remain grim for operators. Only Maersk Line demonstrated with any conviction that it has weathered the storm. Last month it posted its sixth positive quarter as operating profits increased to $548m, up from $504m a year earlier.
