Analysts were not expecting much joy from the world's biggest ocean carrier ahead of its second quarter interim report on August 16. After all, it was a three month period during which there was yet another bloodbath in the container liner industry as the major carriers fought hand to hand battles in a race to the bottom. The quarter saw the key Asia to Europe spot rate indices plunge from around $1,100 per teu at the beginning of April to a severely sub-economic below $500 level 12 weeks later - the sharpest decline in the industry's history - before recovering at the end of June in the wake of desperate capacity cuts and July 1 GRIs.
