When Maersk Line announced its order for the largest containerships ever built back in February 2011, the world was a very different place. The container shipping industry had endured its worst year ever in 2009 as cargo volumes shrank following the global banking crisis. Then to everyone's astonishment, the market bounced back so fast in 2010 - as inventories were replenished - that global carriers produced bumper financial results.
