It is estimated that one-third of the 130m ocean freight containers traded globally each year have misdeclared weights. This, despite the legal obligation for shippers to declare accurate container weights and contents on the shipping note that accompanies the box to the docks. Unfortunately there are many examples of the inherent container weight anarchy that exists in the box industry. Perhaps the highest profile incident was the 4,419 teu MSC Napoii which was beached on the Devon coast and deliberately broken up by salvors after running into difficulty in the English Channel in January 2007.
