RATES ON THE BACK FOOT

Despite continuing high utilisation levels, lessors saw their daily rates soften further in the fourth quarter of 2012 with prices for 20ft standard units dropping below $0.60 in some cases. Overall, daily rates for the main dry freight equipment types dropped by more than 16% during the quarter with daily hire prices down about 25% on their May/June year highs (see figure 1).
