Shippers of perishable produce face much higher shipping costs this year as container lines levy hefty freight rate increases, while the operators of specialist tonnage find themselves with insufficient capacity to handle the sudden increase in demand. With box lines showing considerable resolve, many fruit exporters have switched to the conventional reefership sector as southern hemisphere crops are harvested, but some are being turned away.
