Much has been made in recent months of the prospect that Maersk Line may soon be knocked off its number one perch by Mediterranean Shipping Co, given the larger orderbook of the Geneva-based carrier. But for now, the Danish Line remains firmly ensconced at the top, while signalling that it will soon resume a newbuilding programme to ensure it has the capacity to grow with the market. As the world's two biggest containership operators jostle for position while publicly denying that rankings matter, the rest of the pack remains far behind. Even the fleet of third-placed CMA CGM is only around two-thirds the size of the leading duo.
