Maersk Line has Left most of the competition stunned by such a strong set of financial results at a time when so many global carriers are struggling to balance the books. How did the world's largest containership operator manage to achieve a net operating profit of more than $lbn in the first half of the year while others were barely breaking even? Although chief executive Soren Skou deserves much of the credit for transforming the Danish carrier into the most profitable, the foundation work started some 10 years earlier. That is the view of senior industry executives, some of whom have worked for Maersk and others for rivals, following the latest financial results that show a huge disparity between the Danish line and the rest of the pack.
