ROTTERDAM remains Europe's premier container hub, on the back of a 1.5% upswing in volumes last year on 2015 levels. Throughput just shy of 12.4m teu was driven by strong export and import numbers to both the Far East and North America, offsetting weaknesses in the South American market. In Europe, the Dutch port reported an increase in feeder and shortsea traffic with the UK, Ireland, Spain and Portugal, while the ongoing struggles within the Russian economy weighed down on containerised trade in the Scandinavia/Baltic market.
