THE announcement by Adidas several months ago that it was setting up a factory for the mass production of running shoes in Germany - where it ceased manufacturing activities more than 20 years ago, transferring to Asia instead - suggests that disruptive manufacturing technologies and processes have the potential to transform supply chains and the logistics and freight transport flows behind them, driving near-shoring and re-shoring in Europe and other key consumer regions.
