THE second half of 2017 saw capacity grow faster than demand, leading to low utilisation levels and a weak freight rate environment. In most cases, capacity grew faster than demand because carriers were not blanking sailings to the same extent as in previous years, rather than due to weak volumes. In fact, in 2017 demand was actually quite healthy in most trade lanes.
