Before the capacity of any structure can be assessed properly, it is vital to understand the dead loading condition. There are numerous cases where theoretical structural capacity is inadequate for a structure's self-weight, let alone any live loading. Similarly, there are situations where the physical condition of a structure can affect its assessed capacity. The problems are most apparent with prestressed concrete construction, where a detailed understanding of the pre-tressing forces is needed.
