All change for EU aggregates European Standards in aggregates: are you ready?

Despite the UK's participation in the European single currency still being a very distant prospect, 1 January 2004 marked the introduction of an important piece of EU integration-related regulation for the UK aggregates industry. Members of the Quarry Products Association, the Highways Agency and others have adopted new European standards which will have far-reaching effects, resulting in aggregate buyers, specifiers and suppliers doing business differently. The old British Standards for aggregates will be formally withdrawn from 1 June onwards. As with any fundamental change in industry-wide standards, there is always a risk of confusion over the practical implications of the changes.
