Taw Bridge

When faced with construction challenges on the new Taw Bridge, located on the £27.9m Barnstaple Western Bypass, design-and-build contractor, Nuttall, and its structural engineer, Halcrow, had little hesitation in choosing the balanced cantilever option. Using the balanced cantilever technique to construct multi-span, post-tensioned concrete box girder bridges is a tried and tested option resulting in a reduced requirement for falsework. Either the precast or the in-situ concrete alternative can be selected, depending on site circumstances, and progress can be rapid.
