Upper Eastside Berlin - Challenging Logistics

Five buildings are under construction at Upper Eastside Berlin, which is located in the central district at the junction of Friedrichstraβe and Unter den Linden. Construction firm Koester is erecting a group of buildings on behalf of MEAG on the site of a former hotel to accommodate many classy retail outlets, offices and apartments on a gross floor area of 40,000m~2. The client is Muenchener Rueckversicherungs and the anticipated capital expenditure is around €200 million (approximately US$253m). While the architecture of the multi-storey building complexwith its green courtyard will blend harmoniously with the listed structure of the neighbouring row of houses, the logistics of the construction site presents considerable challenges, particularly at present during the shell construction phase. The area is bounded by three busy roads and is also directly adjacent to an old building. This means that there are virtually no free areas available on which to store construction materials or operate construction machinery.
