ANALYSTS have greeted the start of a US-China trade war that could, in a worst-case scenario, see up to 1% of global container trade affected, with calm over the amount of available capacity in the world container fleet. At the end of June the world fleet stood at 21.3m teu, up nearly 170,000 teu from a month earlier, according to figures from Lloyd's List Intelligence. The number of ships in the fleet rose by 17 as deliveries outpaced demolition again. Neo-panamax and ultra large containership deliveries accounted for over 100,000 teu of new capacity in June as four ships of 20,000 teu or greater entered into service. While the largest of those, the 20,600 teu CMA CGM Jean Mermoz, was for French carrier CMA CGM, Cosco took the lead in total deliveries, with the 20,000 teu Cosco Shipping Libra and Cosco Shipping Virgo, and the 13,500 teu Cosco Shipping Peony.
