Current Web services technologies focus on enabling interoperability and integration of diverse systems. However, these technologies are not able to automate common tasks, such as service discovery using a set of requested capabilities, composition of several services in order to achieve a certain goal, and invocation of such services.rnSemantic Web services apply technologies from the semantic Web in order to automate discovery, composition, and invocation of Web services. In this paper, Martin et al. present OWL-S, a set of elements to express Web services specifications based on the semantic Web ontology language OWL. They describe thoroughly but concisely the main parts of the OWL-S upper ontology, illustrated by examples described using an alternative presentation syntax that makes them more readable. They also describe in detail the needed architecture to perform discovery and composition tasks, along with several tools that implement these scenarios.
