Bioinformatics and computational biology have received a lot of attention recently, driven in no small part by the publicity surrounding the Human Genome Project; the potential benefits of such research have inspired numerous researchers worldwide, in both academia and commercial labs.rnThe editors define bioinformatics and computational biology as "the comprehensive application of mathematics, statistics, science, and computer science to the understanding of living systems." They have collated a timely collection of chapters on related topics (16 in all, with 56 authors contributing), including "Open Computing Grid for Molecular Sciences," "Hierarchical Grid Computing for High-Performance Bioinformatics," "Data Syndication Techniques for Bioinformatics Applications," "Deployment of Grid Life Sciences Applications," "Recent Advances in Solving the Protein Threading Problem," and "Seeing Is Knowing: Visualization of Parameter-Parameter Developments in Biomedical Network Models."
