In mobile communication technology, a tracking area (TA) is a logical grouping of cells. Because user equipment (UE) in this technology moves and changes positions at random, it is necessary to reconfigure TAs to retain reliable communication in long-term evolution (LTE) networks. This results in problems with TA update signaling and UE paging signaling. The "natural objective in TA planning is to reach an optimal balance between update [signaling] and paging signaling."
