Automated segmentation of macular layers in OCT images and quantitative evaluation of performances

Ghorbel and others introduce "automated segmentation of macular layers in [optical coherence tomography, OCT] images and quantitative evaluation of performances," a recent multi-layer segmentation work in OCT image processing. I believe it is best to review this paper in light of the very closely related work by Yang and others [1], which also automatically segments a large number of macular layers, but focuses on the processing speed in the 3D OCT data. Both works were performed around the same time, with both groups of authors apparently unaware of each other's results during submission and publication of the papers. While there is some competition and overlap, both works certainly complement each other, and interested researchers should read both.
