Some books earn their reader's admiration. Initially, the admiration may be immediate or grudging, but as the author's purpose and means are discerned, the admiration grows unabated. This is one of those books. This is computer science at its best. Science proceeds through a method of abstraction, identifying the salient features of a subject and building mathematical models that serve to predict, to guide, and to correct experimental experience; to lay out the foundations and identify where those foundations are solid, shaky,or missing altogether.
