Incorporating behavioral trust theory into system development for ubiquitous applications

In the world of ever-growing ubiquitous and pervasive computing systems, the Internet of Things, and the widespread use of mobile, smart, and wearable devices, users are developing various modes of trust-the key factor for the success of any computer application. Hence, Hoffmann and Sollner's work is in line with the axiom that trust determines application acceptance by new users as well as the retention of existing users. The authors successfully combine research in computer science and behavioral science in order to show trust as a vital component of system design. The authors present the idea that user behavior should also be included in the design process of trusted ubiquitous applications, in addition to the technical aspects of trust. Hoffmann and Sollner also state that there is no unified definition of trust in the computer and behavioral science fields. However, they found in the literature "trust in automation," a significant concept of trust within ubiquitous computing applications. Naturally, this concept incorporates multiple antecedents in performance, process, and purpose, which the authors briefly note.
