Due to user expectations, modern data terminals, such as mobile phone terminals, are required to support multiple modes and multiple standards, such as WLAN 802.1 la/b/g, GSM-900, PCS/DCS, and MICS. Data instruments require an adjustable stable frequency source with low noise, which can be implemented in a small wafer area. This paper, which could be of interest to designers of integrated circuits and their applications, presents a design of an N-frequency synthesizer, which is tunable in the ranges 0.38 to 6 GHz and 9 to 12 GHz. The design sources base reference frequency from a single 9.0 to 12.0 GHz voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and uses a multi-stage multiplexer coupled to a multi-band "divide by N" block.
