Anti-social media: communicating risk through open data, crime maps and locative media

Social networks extend to any interested netizen the freedom to author contents and to have those contents propagated. Transparent distributed applications deployed within social networks could consolidate opinions about events or objects. If the "object of opinion" happens to be a real site like a neighborhood locality, and if the opinion happens to generate fear, then an explanation of consequences would require assistance from other disciplines. The authors explore an existing application and attempt to articulate the complexities involved therein by exposing the value neutrality assumed for the application. The critical examination proceeds with an underlying message urging the designers of such applications to be more cautious in their design of such tools.
