The communication network paradigm has undergone tremendous transformation, leading to changes in traffic patterns over the network. Traditional network architecture and protocols may not be suitable for present-day network and traffic patterns. Software-defined networking (SDN) is an emerging technology that separates network control from the underlying packet forwarding hardware. SDN enables a global approach to specify complex networking tasks in one single control framework, which promises the significant simplification of network management, control, and monitoring. SDN is primarily used in wired networks for better network operation and efficiency. Researchers are studying the feasibility of incorporating SDN in mobile and wireless networks.
