In a country where doughnuts are a morning, afternoon and evening ritual, having a competitive edge in obtaining new locations is everything. Tim Hortons has more than 2,300 stores across Canada and a growing base of 180 locations in key markets within the U.S. Knowing where the next franchise store should go involves market research and business savvy. It also helps if the location can be snapped up before the competition gets a whiff of the address. At the Oakville, Ont.-based TDL Group, the licensing company for Tim Hortons franchises, the real estate department uses Toronto-based Teranet's Teraview gateway, an online service that makes use of Ontario's electronic land registry system to provide land transaction services required for completing real estate purchases faster and at reduced cost without having to rely on third-party services.
