When was the last time your company's computer systems benefited from a clean sweep? The Canadian Alliance Against Software Theft (CAAST) is recommending a thorough spring cleaning of PCs in its ongoing battle against illegal software. CAAST president Jacquie Famu-lak says illegal software can result in security and virus problems creeping up in commonly-used computer applications. "Anyone who uses a computer, whether in the workplace or at home, you reach a point where you have a lot of clutter going on and you need to sort through things," says Famulak. "Software is an asset, and if you are in business, software is something you purchase and charge toward your business. So you need to know what you have ― and legitimately have ― and account for it properly. Just as you would manage the number of computers you would have in your office, or the number of cars you have in a fleet, you need to manage your software assets as well."
