My favourite thief that summer was known as the Floppy Hat Bandit. From the videotapes, she looked like she might be going to church, except that she wore sunglasses indoors and she approached bank tellers with a note demanding a bag full of cash. I learned of her when I was a part of a summer program at the Toronto Star monitoring police, fire and ambulance radios. I learned something else that summer, too: bank employees were told not to tackle the Floppy Hat Bandit, but to give her what she wanted and let her leave.
