I was chatting with an ex-nortel employee recently who didn't feel much like talking about the company's current accounting and financial woes. Instead, he got excited reminiscing about the energy and passion of the community of people the company created and nurtured during his tenure there. This sense of belonging to a community with a purpose was the reason he got excited about going to work. As he put it, "We believed we were changing the world with our ideas and products. The energy extended beyond the company into the local communities where we lived."
