Cybersecurity companies can, as you may imagine, have some self-interest in hyping the pervasiveness and power of security threats. But comments recently made by Evgeny Kaspersky, he of Kaspersky Labs, in an interview with Spiegel went a little beyond the pale in the opinion of at least one secur ity blogger. "Do you remember the total power outage in large parts of North America in August 2003?" Kaspersky said. "Today, I'm pretty sure a virus triggered that catastrophe. And that was eight years ago." This left James Arlen sputtering with rage and venting on LiquidMatrix. org under the headline, "Cyberdouchery of Kasperskian Proportions." "You don't know, you weren't there, you have effectively ZERO under standing of large scale grid operations in North America," Arlen fumed at the "otherwise acceptable" Kapersky. "I'd challenge you to find me a virus that runs on TruCluster and when there are thousands of pages of facts available, your opinion, however well-formed, doesn't mean sh—."
