This study examines methods of managing computer generated objects as a set of objects, each of which can be described at multiple levels of detail (LOD). We describe a new adaptive display algorithm for hierarchical model representations, which is based on fuzzy logic. The idea behind the algorithm is to use the laws of physics and geometry combined with linguistically formulated expert knowledge in order to generate the best image possible without falling below the target frame rate. Tests show that the algorithm is easy to implement and fast enough to achieve real-time updates of the switching distances.
