The CAL conference was held in April, 2011 at Manchester Metropolitan University in the North of England. The CAL conference has been run biennially for over 30 years, publishing a selection of papers from each event in Computers & Education since 1979. The conference has always been concerned with the future of education and with pushing the boundaries of the domain, with interest as far back as 1983 in issues such as 'CAL in the home'.In 2011, the focus was explicitly on 'the future of learning,' focusing in particular on four issues which were selected to build on the longstanding interest of the CAL Conference in innovation, its substantial history in the field, and the emergence of the increasingly important informal learning landscape and issues of equity and social justice:
