Teachers and scholars working at the intersection of multimodality, the public sphere, and new media will find The available means of persuasion: Mapping a theory and pedagogy of multimodal public rhetoric (2012) an ambitious and very resourceful project. David M. Sheridan, Jim Ridolfo, and Anthony J. Michel (2012) challenge traditional models of the public sphere by considering a wide range of rhetorical forms (from artistic designs of lamps to digital campaigns). In light of these examples, the authors argue that the rhetorical process goes well beyond the composing process. To be an effective rhetor in the public sphere, one needs to navigate complex cultural-material contexts, pull from multiple semiotic resources, and, more importantly, invest in circulation and distribution. This approach can be the basis of a rhetorical education that can teach students how to integrate more fully "multimodal rhetoric into [their] collective public-rhetorical habits" (p. ⅹⅱ).
