Dear public sector IT professionals: brace yourselves, it's going to get rough. Depending on who you talk to, observers of local government and Whitehall IT expect cuts of between 10% and 40% in technology budgets for the 2010/11 financial year. Last week's pre-budget report had rather vague mentions of IT savings, with very little detail on how or where they would be implemented (see page 8). But that comes on top of the previously announced Operational Efficiency Programme, which identified £7.2bn of savings from back-office and IT operations.
