摘要

Being able to deliver goods and services world-wide is a challenge. Tailoring one's products to the user environment of the local market including jurisdictional levels, demands attention to detail, adaptability and flexibility. Being successful in a market requires not only understanding the needs of clients but also being able to communicate with them in their language. Thus multilingualism is good business, is good for business and those developing products and services should think multilingual from the start. Now that technical barriers to localization and multilingualism are falling away, one can and should focus on resolving related outstanding standardization issues particularly those required for electronic commerce (EC) and especially for EC via the Internet. How can existing international standards used in global trade become IT-enabled and EC-facilitated in support of localization and multilingual requirements? What are some practical approaches that one could take based on real world examples? What are the standardization requirements for interoperability of business information in support of electronic commerce serving the global marketplace, i.e., GIS/GII needs?
