Color Laser Printing Made Affordable

With prices dropping below the $500 mark, color laser printers are no longer a luxury peripheral found only in large offices. We looked at two midrange models: the Dell 3110cn and the Lexmark C530dn. Both are priced at $499 and offer generally fast print speeds and networking capabilities. The two printers are suitable for home or office. While the 3110cn offers business-friendly features such as optional paper trays, its color print quality falls short. The opposite is true of the C530dn. Both machines are large and heavy, so make sure you have the room to accommodate one. And while printing in color is never cheap, running these models will generally cost less per page in consumables (less than 2 cents per page for a black text page, and around 9 cents per page for a typical color printout) than printing the same pages from a typical budget inkjet (5 cents and 15 cents, respectively).
