Regional planning is not a new idea, yet I had not appreciated its full importance. The value of this volume lies in reviewing assorted programs and illustrating their positive effects on the environment. As one who has no first-hand knowledge of regional planning, I found this book an informative primer on different regional planning approaches. In an era of growing populations and a pressing need for low-carbon production, regional planning assumes greater importance. The era of separate, independent communities needs to be replaced with a wider perspective and cooperation especially as urban centres merge. Unfortunately, regional planning is not government mandated. Transportation, land and water use, housing and job development, growth management, natural resources in addition to historical sites, and reducing gas emissions require a broader consideration than just attention to individual communities.
