Rapid voluntary arm movements are known to be preceded by a complex pattern of postural muscle activation/deacti-vation called 'anticipatory postural adjustments' (APAs) (Cordo and Nashner l982; Bouisset and Zattara 1987; Allison and Henry 2002). APAs are directed to counter in advance the perturbation to posture and equilibrium elicited by the voluntary movement (Bouisset and Zattara 1987). Postural muscles are also known to be activated during ('on-line postural adjustments', OPAs) and following voluntary movement ('consecutive postural adjustments', CPAs) (Bouisset and Zattara 1981; Bouisset and Zattara 1987). The current study tested the effect of lower limb muscle fatigue induced by series of high-level isometric contractions (IC) on (1) the postural adjustments (including APAs, OPAs and CPAs) on (2) the postural maintenance during rapid bilateral forward push task from the erect posture.
