Nadezhda Purtova is a PhD candidate at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society in the Netherlands. Her paper is intended as an attempt in her words to "facilitate a meaningful European discussion on propertization of personal data" by first exploring its genesis as an idea in the United States. It argues that the concept of propertization, when used in this way, could act as an alternative to the existing data protection regime and in so doing overcome the alleged shortcomings of US data protection regulation.
