SMEs do not know their data protection responsibilities, says privacy watchdog

Most small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the UK are not aware of their obligations under the Data Protection Act, according to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Research commissioned by the ICO found that only 22% of SMEs knew they had to keep customer information accurate and up to date. Just over half of small businesses realised they had to keep customer information safe and secure. To dispel the lack of knowledge, the ICO has released advice on what SMEs can do to comply.
