Due to its practical use in animation and image editing, two-dimensional shape deformation has received great attention during the past decades. The traditional paradigms, spreading local modifications over the whole shape, will cause a global deformation. For the simultaneous realization of the local control and preservation of the rigidity of the shape, a novel deformation method is proposed for point, skeleton, and cage handles. Our framework can be accomplished in terms of the minimization of the improved as-rigid-as-possible energy with local and smooth penalties, named locally controlled as-rigid-as-possible energy. The visually pleasing experiment results demonstrate the success of our method in two-dimensional character deformation.
